About me

Born in Madrid in 2001, Spanish double bassist Jimena Rodríguez is a musician currently pursuing her Master’s degree at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) under the guidance of Professor Wies de Boevé. She completed her Bachelor’s studies at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, where she studied with Duncan McTier, Wies de Boevé, and Antonio García-Araque.

As an orchestral and chamber musician, Jimena has performed with several ensembles including the Sinfonieorchester Basel (as an intern, 2024–2025), and joined the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich as an intern for the 2025–2026 season. She has also collaborated with the Orchester der Oper Zürich, the Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen, the Bach Stiftung St Gallen, participated in a contemporary music project with Collegium Novum Zürich, and recorded a CD with Da Vinci Records as a member of Trio Falla. Earlier experiences include performances with the Tiroler Festspiele Erl Orchestra, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, and the Escuela Reina Sofía Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, under conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Péter Eötvös, Pablo González, David Afkham, and Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

Jimena has recently been awarded the second prize at the Rahn Musikpreis competition, further adding to a trajectory marked by numerous scholarships and distinctions. She has received support from the Bruno Schuler Foundation, Lyra Foundation, and Fundación Alvargonzález for her Master’s studies, as well as special honors from the Regional Government of Madrid for outstanding academic achievement and from the AIE Foundation for her Bachelor’s degree. Her achievements also include several prizes from national and international competitions — among them the Special Prize at the Chamber Music Competition of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (2023) with Trio Falla.

Throughout her studies, Jimena has taken part in numerous masterclasses with leading double bass pedagogues such as Matthew McDonald, Janne Saksala, Christine Hoock, Dorin Marc, Gunars Upatnieks, Michinori Bunya, Rick Stotijn, Ernst Weissensteiner, Jeff Bradetich, and Luis A. da Fonseca. Her interest for chamber music has also led her to work with musicians like Jens-Peter Maintz, Gustavo Núñez, Jacques Zoon, Hansjörg Schellenberger, Avri Levitan, and Mor Biron.
